Monty moved to Midland, TX in 1956 and began his career as a geologist with Humble Oil and Refining Co. that would later become Exxon Mobil. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. During the 1970’s he became an independent geologist working primarily in the Permian Basin. During this period, he also ran Gist Cattle Co. and was an active member of Tejas Vaqueros. Monty later served on the Advisory Board of the Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University. He was an active member of the Exchange Club and the West Texas Geological Society. Monty joined the family business, Montego Minerals, in 2010 and continued his passion for geology (some of which is still used today by various companies) until his passing in 2024 at the age of 90. Monty’s knowledge and experience of the Permian Basin served as the bedrock for the foundation and growth of Montego Minerals.
